AMD
Open source activity
As of Oct 28, 2026
Nearly all of AMD's recent open-source activity sits inside ROCm, its CUDA-alternative software stack, rather than under the AMD org name itself. The standout is a structural one: ROCm consolidated what used to be a sprawl of separate repos into unified "super repos" — rocm-systems and rocm-libraries — a restructuring that suggests AMD is still actively simplifying ROCm's packaging rather than treating the stack as finished.
On top of that consolidation sits aiter, an "AI Tensor Engine for ROCm" aimed at inference-side acceleration, and TheRock, a lighter-weight build system for HIP and ROCm meant to lower the barrier to actually compiling the stack. Combined with ROCgdb (a ROCm-specific fork of GDB for GPU debugging), the overall picture is a software stack still being actively re-architected for ease of adoption — the kind of foundational tooling work a hardware challenger has to keep doing to make its chips usable without CUDA.
