Open source activity
As of Oct 28, 2026
VS Code remains Microsoft's single largest and most active open-source property by a wide margin — nearly 194,000 stars and still getting constant commits — but the rest of the recent activity clusters around getting agentic AI into ordinary enterprise workflows. Magentic-Marketplace simulates how agentic markets evolve when multiple AI agents transact with each other, a research tool for a problem Microsoft's own enterprise customers are starting to hit in practice.
More concretely, the Employee Self-Service Agent Developer Kit lets a company customize a GitHub Copilot-based HR agent for its own internal use — a template aimed squarely at enterprise IT departments rather than AI researchers — while onnxruntime-genai and Foundry Local focus on running generative models locally rather than through a hosted API. Together they read as Microsoft building out the plumbing for agentic AI to run inside a company's own walls, not just through Azure-hosted endpoints.
