Character.AI's most recently touched public repos aren't about its own chatbot product at all — they're tooling built on top of a rival's platform: a Go SDK for Claude agents and a repo of "Claude configuration and skills," both last pushed in September. That's a striking shift in direction for a company whose actual consumer product and underlying model training pipeline (prompt-poet, pipelining-sft, the Ovi and avatar-fx repos) haven't been touched in months.

The timing lines up with what's already been reported elsewhere on machine.net: Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 in October citing state child-safety litigation, and the bankruptcy filings show Disney paying roughly nine times more to acquihire its former staff than its own technology was valued at. Publishing tooling for a competitor's agent SDK rather than iterating on its own stack is consistent with a team in the middle of that transition, not a company still actively building its own model.
