Cognition Raises $2B at a $48B Valuation — Nearly 2x in Under Four Months

Cognition, maker of the AI coding agent Devin, closed a $2 billion funding round on September 8 that values the company at $48 billion, according to TechCrunch. That's nearly double the $25 billion valuation Cognition carried after raising $1 billion just three and a half months earlier, on May 27 — one of the fastest valuation step-ups among the current wave of AI coding-agent startups, and a sign that investors still see room for more than one winner in the category.

The pace mirrors, and in percentage terms exceeds, a similar jump at rival Factory, which builds autonomous coding agents it calls "Droids." Factory raised a $50 million Series B in September 2025 at roughly a $300 million valuation, then a $150 million Series C in April 2026 at a $1.5 billion valuation — about a 5x step-up over roughly seven months, on a much smaller base than Cognition's. By September 2026, Factory had raised again to reach a $5 billion valuation, according to TechFundingNews. Neither company's trajectory resembles a market consolidating around a single leader; both are instead attracting fresh capital at rapidly compounding valuations within months of their prior rounds.

What the money is chasing

The through-line across both deals is investor conviction that autonomous coding agents — tools that can independently write, test, and ship code rather than just autocomplete it — represent a large enough market to support multiple well-funded competitors simultaneously, rather than the typical venture pattern of one company pulling decisively ahead. TechCrunch's framing of the Cognition round made that explicit, describing it as a signal that "AI coding is far from a winner-take-all market." For a sector where GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Devin, and a growing list of agent-native tools are all raising at once, that reading has real implications for how much capital the category can absorb before any shakeout begins.
