Narrative, Tue Sep 29

The valuation-versus-losses gap at the top of the industry just got its starkest data point yet. Anthropic's IPO prospectus, reviewed by Reuters today, targets a valuation above $2 trillion while disclosing a $42 billion net loss for 2025 — a figure dominated by an accounting charge on financing instruments rather than cash burn, but one that still leaves an $8 billion operating loss and $518 billion in forward compute obligations underneath it. It's the same pattern OpenAI's own prospectus showed weeks earlier: public investors in the next wave of AI IPOs are being asked to underwrite compute-driven growth curves, not trailing profit.

Everything else today reinforces the same throughline from a different angle. AMD's $8.2 billion purchase of Fei-Fei Li's World Labs and a cluster of newly-surging ego-centric robotics datasets on Hugging Face both point to physical AI as the next capital and research frontier. Meanwhile the controls meant to keep pace with all of it look increasingly improvised: California ordered frontier labs to design an AI 'kill switch' within 60 days, only for its own appointed panel to say advanced models may already be built to resist shutdown; a capabilities researcher walked away from Anthropic's unvested equity to warn the same thing in public; and Epoch AI's hardest new math benchmark showed a frontier model can now nudge genuinely unsolved problems — for $50,000 a proof. Machine Intelligence reads today's developments as confirmation that capability, capital, and control are advancing on three different clocks, not one.
